OCIA (Becoming Catholic)

OCIA – The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Parish joyfully welcomes those who are seeking to deepen their relationship with Christ and His Church through the process of becoming Catholic.

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the journey the Church offers to:

  • Adults who have never been baptized

  • Those baptized in another Christian tradition and are now considering becoming Catholic

  • Baptized Catholics who were not raised in the faith and have not yet received First Eucharist or Confirmation

OCIA is a time of prayer, learning, discernment, and community. Whether you are certain or just curious, we would be honored to walk with you on this path of discovery and grace.

At Saint Kateri Parish, we welcome all who are interested in joining us on the journey of faith. If you’re not Catholic, or if you haven’t received all of your sacraments, we invite you to consider OCIA.

We highly recommend this process as a beautiful, low-pressure way to explore the Catholic faith and your relationship with Jesus Christ. You are not alone in this journey—we’re here to support you with open hearts and prayerful encouragement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does OCIA stand for?
OCIA is the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. Formerly known as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), the name was updated to reflect that those discerning this path are part of a spiritual order within the Church—journeying together in faith.

When and where do OCIA sessions meet?
Our OCIA sessions typically meet weekly. At Saint Kateri, exact days and times vary. Contact Mark Keller at (585) 544-8889 x3129 or mark.keller@dor.org for the latest schedule and to find a time that fits your life. If conflicts arise, alternative options may be available.

How long does the OCIA process take?
Most participants journey through the process over six – eight months. However, the pace can vary depending on your readiness and prior faith experience.

How do I register?
You can register at the first session, and there’s no cost to attend. However, we encourage reaching out to Mark Keller ahead of time so we can welcome you personally and help you get started.

Who is OCIA for?

  • Adults seeking baptism in the Catholic Church

  • Baptized Christians from other traditions who desire full communion

  • Baptized Catholics who were never confirmed or who have not received First Communion

Can non-students join the program?
Yes. At Saint Kateri Parish, we welcome adults from all walks of life. However, if you’re not connected to our parish or local Catholic community, we encourage a conversation with the OCIA Director to determine the best fit for you. We can also recommend programs at neighboring parishes if needed.

Is this a high-pressure program?
Not at all. OCIA is a process of discernment, not obligation. Our role is to support you in seeking God’s will for your life, wherever that may lead. Ask questions, take your time, and let the Holy Spirit guide you.

What if I have another question?
Please contact Mark Keller at (585) 544-8889 x3129 or mark.keller@dor.org directly. We are here to help!
